University-Wide Policies

Duke University protects academic freedom for its entire instructional staff, and guards against incursions upon its own essential academic freedoms.

Duke University is committed to excellence in all of its operations. It conducts its affairs ethically, honestly, and in compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This includes U.S. and international antitrust laws.

Duke University expects its employees to comply with these laws, to observe the Implementation Guidelines that immediately follow this Policy, and to consult the Antitrust Compliance Officer (Chris Lott at 919-684-3955 or chris.lott@duke.edu) wherever there is a question about the legality of a practice. It is the responsibility of each Duke employee to make sure that their actions are consistent with the antitrust laws.

Violation of this Policy may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. Violations of the law may also result in legal liability for Duke and individual employees involved in the misconduct, and could lead to significant fines or penalties, including criminal penalties.

Policies outline situations in which an instructor may ask the student to leave the class meeting, and expected behavior of students and potential disciplinary action they face for violating policy.

Addresses the type of drone operations acceptable and processes for requesting permission to operate drones on Duke property or for Duke purposes.

Policy regarding use of name(s), images, symbols, logos, and trademarks that are associated with Duke University's name.

Process for handling of student records in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA)

Gambling is a violation of NC state law and Duke policy.  Outlines gambling-like activities that are permitted.

Defines hazing and associated violation levels, along with sanctions for hazing, and reporting process.

Defines behavior that constitutes physical abuse, fighting and endangerment.

Policy outlining use of facilities to promote or support individuals or organizations campaigning for public office, and the federal and state laws guiding and/or prohibiting to Duke's support of political candidates or parties.

Students and groups are expected to respect the property of others (including that of the university) and may be subject to disciplinary action.

Requires any employee (faculty, staff) to notify the Office of Student Conduct with details regarding the allegations if become aware of an allegation of sexual misconduct involving a student.

Student Sexual Misconduct Policy prohibits all forms of sex/gender-based harassment, sexual/gender violence, sexual exploitation, relationship violence (domestic violence and dating violence), and stalking.

Rules around soliciting on University property, and where student solicitation is permitted.

Duke is a tobacco-free work environment other than designated areas.

Student Tobacco Policy: Duke University seeks to preserve a living and working environment supportive of behaviors that contribute to the physical health and well-being of all community members. Use of any tobacco substance is not permitted in any university building, including residence halls and apartments.

Note: Effective beginning July 1, 2020, Duke University will become tobacco-free on all property and grounds owned and leased by Duke.
